The proposed method involves high dimensional model representation for the limit state function approximation, transformation technique to obtain the contribution of the fuzzy variables to the convolution integral and fast Fourier transform for solving the convolution integral. In this methodology, efforts are required in evaluating conditional responses at a selected input determined by sample points, as compared to full scale simulation methods, thus the computational efficiency is accomplished. The proposed method is applicable for structural reliability estimation involving any number of fuzzy and random variables with any kind of distribution. These resource restricted sensor nodes are prone to various malicious attacks, data faults and data losses. Presence of faulty data, data loss in collected patient data may lead to incorrect analysis of patient condition, which decreases the reliability of pervasive healthcare system. The aim of this work is to alert the caregiver and raise the alarm only when the patient enters into medical emergency situation. The proposed scheme also reduces the false alarms and alerts caused by data fault and misbehaving sensor nodes. To achieve this, we introduce a context aware trust management scheme for data fault detection, data reconstruction and event detection in pervasive healthcare systems. It employs heuristic functions, data correlation and contextual information based algorithms to identify the data faults and events. It also reconstructs the data faults and data loss for identifying patient condition. Performance of this approach is evaluated with the help of real data samples collected by medical sensor network prototype of remote patient monitoring application. The experimental results show that the proposed trust scheme outperforms state-of-the-art techniques and achieves good detection accuracy in data fault detection and event detection. © 2019, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.Item Developing a knowledge-based safety culture instrument for construction industry: Reliability and validity assessment in Indian context(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2019) Deepak, M.D.; Mahesh, G.Purpose: Harnessing the power of knowledge management is important for minimizing accidents occurring at construction projects. Reliability of LHD is very significant to achieve the expected targets of production. The performance of the equipment should be maintained at its highest level to fulfill the targets. This can be accomplished only by reducing the sudden breakdowns of component/subsystems in a complex system. The identification of defective component/subsystems can be possible by performing the downtime analysis. Hence, it is very important to develop the proper maintenance strategies for replacement or repair actions of the defective ones. Suitable maintenance management actions improve the performance of the equipment. This paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach: Reliability analysis (renewal approach) has been used to analyze the performance of LHD machine. Allocations of best-fit distribution of data sets were made by the utilization of Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K–S) test. Parametric estimation of theoretical probability distributions was made by utilizing the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) method. Findings: Independent and identical distribution (IID) assumption of data sets was validated through trend and serial correlation tests. On the basis of test results, the data sets are in accordance with IID assumption. Therefore, renewal process approach has been utilized for further investigation. Allocations of best-fit distribution of data sets were made by the utilization of Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K–S) test. Parametric estimation of theoretical probability distributions was made by utilizing the MLE method. Reliability of each individual subsystem has been computed according to the best-fit distribution. In respect of obtained reliability results, the reliability-based preventive maintenance (PM) time schedules were calculated for the expected 90 percent reliability level. Research limitations/implications: As the reliability analysis is one of the complex techniques, it requires strategic decision making knowledge for the selection of methodology to be used. As the present case study was from a public sector company, operating under financial constraints the conclusions/findings may not be universally applicable. Originality/value: The present study throws light on this equipment that need a tailored maintenance schedule, partly due to the peculiar mining conditions, under which they operate. This study mainly focuses on estimating the performance of four numbers of well-mechanized LHD systems with reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) modeling. Based on the drawn results, reasons for performance drop of each machine were identified. Suitable recommendations were suggested for the enhancement of performance of capital intensive production equipment. As the maintenance management is only the means for performance improvement of the machinery, PM time intervals were estimated with respect to the expected rate of reliability level. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.Item Performance and reliability of Al2O3 nanoparticles doped multicomponent Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu-Ni-Ge solder alloy(Elsevier Ltd, 2020) Tikale, S.; Prabhu, K.N.The effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles addition on melting, microhardness, microstructural, and mechanical properties of multicomponent Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu-0.06Ni-0.01Ge (SACNiGe) solder alloy was investigated. The shear strength of the capacitor assemblies under varying high-temperature environments for different nanocomposites was assessed and the reliability of the joint was determined using Weibull analysis. The SACNiGe solder doped with 0.01 and 0.05 wt% Al2O3 nanoparticles to prepare nanocomposites and tested on the solder joints for their performance and reliability under different thermal conditions. Plain copper and Ni[sbnd]P layer coated substrates were used to investigate the effect of different surface finish on the joint reliability. The addition of ceramic nanoparticles in small amounts did not affect the melting parameters of the solder. In comparison with the bare solder alloy, nanocomposites yielded about 20% increase in tin-climb height and 14% higher microhardness. The dispersion of ceramic nanoparticles in the matrix and presence of Ni and Ge elements in the solder resulted in substantial microstructure refinement and about 24% supression in intermetallic compounds (IMCs) growth at the joint interface. In comparison with the bare Cu substrate, the Ni[sbnd]P coating on the substrate provided a strong diffusion barrier, promoted thin and complex (Cu, Ni)6Sn5 IMC layer formation at the interface, and significantly retarded the IMC growth kinetics under elevated temperature conditions. Under varying thermal conditions, nanoparticles doped solder compositions showed about 20% increase in the joint shear strength value. The reliability of joints improved appreciably with the addition of 0.05 wt% Al2O3 nanoparticles in the solder. Samples with SACNiGe+0.05Al2O3 nanocomposite reflowed on Ni[sbnd]P coating showed about 32% higher reliability than that on the uncoated-copper substrate. The SACNiGe solder joint performance and reliability could be significantly improved by minor weight percent addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles in the presence of Ni[sbnd]P coating on the substrate. © 2020 Elsevier LtdItem Performance Evaluation of Underground Mining Machinery: A Case Study(Springer, 2020) BalaRaju, J.; Govinda Raj, M.; Murthy, C.S.N.Unexpected occurrence of uneven breakdowns and their consequences have a significant influence on the equipment life. Hence, there is a need to discover the motives for the happening of critical potential failures and required repair or replacement action to control. Reliability analysis is utilized to approximate the performance of the equipment. In this study, the performance of the underground mining machinery known as load haul dumper (LHD) has been estimated with reliability analysis. The best-fit distribution of the data sets was selected by testing the numerous statistical distributions using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K-S) test. The percentage of reliability of each subsystem of the LHD machine was computed based on the best-fit approximation. The overall system reliability of the equipment was estimated using a series configuration-based reliability block diagram (RBD) approach. The reliability-based preventive maintenance (PM) time intervals were also computed for estimated 90.00% reliability. To accomplish the desired level of reliability, a review on maintenance programs should be made. Possible recommendations were made to the maintenance department in the industry for improvement in equipment. © 2020, ASM International.Item Bond shear strength of Al2O3 nanoparticles reinforced 2220-capacitor/SAC305 solder interconnects reflowed on bare and Ni-coated copper substrate(Springer, 2021) Tikale, S.; Prabhu, K.N.The influence of Al2O3 nanoparticles addition in trace amounts and electroless Ni–P substrate coating on the microstructure development and bond shear strength of Sn-3.0Ag–0.5Cu (SAC305) solder joint were investigated. The performance and reliability of the 2220-capacitor joints with Al2O3 nanoparticle reinforced nanocomposites reflowed on Cu and Ni–P coated substrate were analyzed under varying high-temperature environments. The addition of nanoparticles enhanced the wettability and microhardness of the solder and considerably refined the joint microstructure. The dispersion and adsorption of Al2O3 nanoparticles resulted in the suppression of intermetallic (IMC) growth at the interface and refinement of the ?-Sn grains as well as IMC precipitates into the matrix. The Ni–P coating on the substrate significantly retarded the IMC growth kinetics resulting in the formation of a thin and uniform IMC layer at the joint interface. The thermal stability and performance of the joint under high-temperature environments were enhanced due to the Ni–P coating on the substrate. Compared to the unreinforced SAC305 solder joint with bare Cu substrate, joints with SAC305 + 0.05Al2O3 composite showed about 17% higher shear strength with bare Cu substrate and about 27% higher strength with Ni–P coated substrate. The Weibull distribution analysis indicates a significant improvement in joint reliability of the 2220-capacitor/SAC305 solder assembly using SAC305 + 0.05Al2O3 nanocomposite and Ni-coated substrate. The ANOVA study suggests that the solder joint performance majorly depends on the operating environment, solder composition, and the substrate finish. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC part of Springer Nature.Item Impact of Side Friction on Travel Time Reliability of Urban Public Transit(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021) Harsha, M.M.; Mulangi, R.H.Travel time reliability is the key aspect that indicates the quality of urban public transit service. The studies on travel time reliability of the public transit system in Indian traffic conditions are few. Also, the impact of side friction elements on travel time reliability has not been considered in the previous studies. Hence, the present study aims to quantify the different types of side friction elements and analyse their impact on the travel time reliability of the public bus transit system. The field data consisting of side friction elements, traffic volume, and travel time of public bus transit have been collected and extracted at two different road sections (divided and undivided) in the Mysore city (Karnataka, India) during weekdays and weekends. The data are grouped into static and dynamic side frictions. An approach has been proposed to represent different types of side friction elements with a single index called the Side Friction Index (SFI) using relative weight analysis. Travel time reliability is represented using measures such as Buffer Time Index (BTI), Planning Time Index (PTI), Travel Time Index (TTI) and Reliable Buffer Index (RBI). The impact of side friction on travel time reliability was found to be sensitive to traffic volume, and hence the thresholds for different traffic volume levels have been determined using K-means clustering method. It was observed from relative weight analysis that the static side friction has a higher weightage (0.509 and 0.327 for the undivided road and divided road respectively) than the dynamic side friction elements in describing the variation of travel time. The impact of side friction on reliability measures at different traffic volume levels has been studied and found to have a non-linear (exponential) relationship. The impact of SFI has been observed to be higher on TTI and PTI in comparison with BTI. The study outcomes show that the impact of side friction on TTI and PTI is sensitive to traffic volume, especially at higher traffic volume level and impact of side friction on BTI is less, especially at medium traffic volume level. The inference from the study shows that the impact of side friction elements varies with respect to the type of road (divided and undivided), traffic volume levels, different days of week (weekday and weekend), and different time periods of day. © 2021, Iran University of Science and Technology.Item Reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) investigation of Load Haul Dumpers (LHDs): a case study(Springer, 2022) Balaraju, B.; Raj, G.R.; Murthy, S.M.Load Haul Dumpers (LHDs) are prominent equipment employed for transportation operations in many of the underground mines. This equipment often suffers from frequent breakdowns due to a variety of technical and managerial practices resulting in increased maintenance costs and loss of production and productivity. Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) analysis deal with the optimal functioning of equipment, maintenance scheduling, controlling cost, and improvement of availability and performance. Keeping this in view, the current study focused on the estimation of the performance of the equipment using RAM investigation. The required failure and repair data of LHDs were collected from field investigations. Graphical analyses using Trend and serial correlation tests and analytical analysis using Statistic-U test were conducted to validate the Independent and Identical Distribution (IID) nature of the data sets. Based on the above tests, the Renewal Process was adopted to carry out the RAM analysis. The best-fit approximation of datasets was selected by performing the Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K–S) test. In addition to that, the reliability-based Preventive Maintenance time intervals were estimated to improve the percentage of reliability. © 2021, The Society for Reliability Engineering, Quality and Operations Management (SREQOM), India and The Division of Operation and Maintenance, Lulea University of Technology, Sweden.
