Item Gridable Electric Vehicle (GEV) Aggregation in Distribution Network to Support Grid Requirements: A Communication Approach(Walter de Gruyter GmbH info@degruyter.com, 2017) Hampannavar, S.; Chavhan, S.; Yaragatti, U.R.; Naik, A.Electric Vehicles (EV) can be connected to the grid for power transaction and also serve as distributed resource (DR) or distributed energy storage system (DESS). The concept of connecting group of EVs or gridable EVs (GEV) to the grid is called Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G). V2G is a prominent energy storage system as it is flexible and can be used to support the grid requirements in order to meet the time varying load demand. Optimal placement of GEV aggregation in power distribution network is very challenging and helps in maintaining stability of the power system for a shorter duration of time. In this paper, algorithm is developed for estimating parameters like Ploss, Qloss, Vpu based on past history and wireless access support for Control and Monitoring Unit (CMU) to aggregator agent communication is proposed using Long Term Evolution (LTE) protocol. The load flow studies are carried using MiPOWER software in order to obtain the optimal location for the placement of GEV aggregation in power distribution network. LTE physical layer is modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the performance is analyzed using bit error rate (BER) v/s signal to noise ratio (SNR) curves. © 2017 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston 2017.Item DC-link current based position estimation and speed sensorless control of a BLDC motor used for electric vehicle applications(De Gruyter Open Ltd, 2021) Febin, F.D.; Jayan, J.; Srinivasan, M.K.; Prabhakaran, P.Sensors of any kind contribute to extra space and electronics when they are used in any application. Besides, the sensor noise also has the effect of altering the overall gain of the system. This is more prevalent in non-linear systems like motor control. In applications which have strict space constraints like Electric vehicles, the use of sensors must be optimized, which, in turn, gave rise to many sensorless state estimation strategies. This paper proposes a novel sensorless control technique for brushless direct current (BLDC) motor used in electric vehicle applications. The concept of sensorless control in BLDC Motor drive eliminates the hall-effect position sensor, thereby giving better performance and improves the robustness of the overall drive system. The main objective of this work is to estimate the position of the motor at standstill condition using stator saturation effect concerning the rotor, accelerate the motor from standstill so that enough back EMF is generated. This acceleration technique speeds up the motor to a stage where a self-actuating control mechanism is used to generate control signals with back EMF or line voltages. The motor can be started with a load, which is a significant constraint for electric vehicle application. The proposed method will avoid the reverse rotation of the motor. The proposed work is simulated in Matlab/Simulink software, and results obtained show that it works well under dynamic conditions of starting, acceleration and load switching. The hardware setup of the proposed work is developed using the TMS320F2812 DSP processor. Simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed work for electric vehicle application. © 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston 2021.Item A novel nine-level boost inverter with a low component count for electric vehicle applications(John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2021) Shiva Naik, B.S.; Yellasiri, Y.; Aditya, K.; Nageswar Rao, B.N.In electric vehicles (EVs), considerable battery cells are cascaded in series for motor driving to improve the output voltage. The series combination of battery cells causes challenges like isolation of faulty cells, voltage unbalance, and slow charge equalization. Therefore, state-of-charge (SOC) and voltage equalization circuits are often used in industries to protect the battery cells. A nine-level inverter circuit with a double voltage boost is proposed to reduce the above issues based on the switch-capacitor (SC) principle. Unique features like self-balancing, voltage boosting are attained, which cannot be achieved through traditional inverters. The proposed topology can operate at a wide range of modulation indices ((Formula presented.)) to produce different voltage levels. The absence of a back-end H-bridge in the proposed circuit offers low voltage stress across the semiconductors. The operating principle, capacitor sizing, and modulation approach are presented. Further, experimental tests are conducted at different loading conditions to verify the performance of the proposed circuit. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Item Phase Current Reconstruction Method With an Improved Direct Torque Control of SRM Drive for Electric Transportation Applications(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022) Ronanki, D.; Pittam, K.R.; Dekka, A.; Parthiban, P.; Beig, A.R.Acquisition of the accurate phase currents is indispensable for the control and protection of switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives for electric transportation applications. Existing phase current reconstruction techniques for SRM are implemented under the current control techniques, which generate large torque pulsations. Therefore, the direct torque control (DTC) method can be adopted to minimize torque pulsations and to enhance transient performance in electrified vehicles. However, the existing current estimation methods cannot be applied to DTC strategies due to the simultaneous conduction of all phases at any switching instant. Furthermore, it offers a lower torque per ampere ($T/A$) ratio and draws a high source current. This article addresses the aforementioned concerns by proposing a cost-effective phase current reconstruction method with an improved DTC strategy for a 4-kW four-phase SRM drive. This method employs a 16-sector partition method with a new voltage vector selection by detecting zero-current regions of each phase. As a result, the long-tail currents can be avoided, thereby limiting the simultaneous conduction of all phases. The simulation and test results show that the proposed DTC has minimal torque pulsations, high $T/A$ ratio, low converter losses, and lower source current ripple in comparison to the existing DTC schemes under various operating conditions. Also, the proposed phase current estimation method effectively reconstructs the phase currents under both steady-state and transient operating conditions. © 1972-2012 IEEE.Item Design and Implementation of Different Drive Topologies for Control of Induction Motor for Electric Vehicle Application(River Publishers, 2022) Husain, M.A.; Rajput, R.; Gupta, M.K.; Tabrez, M.; Ahmad, M.W.; Ilahi Bakhsh, F.I.To improve driving range in Electric vehicles (EV), parallel-series connection of battery cells is a necessity. Supressing the circulating current in the battery board of parallel connected battery strings helps improve the lifespan of the batteries. This study presents a comparison of the requirements of parallel strings of batteries in three different popular topologies for open end winding induction motor (IM) drives in EV. The topologies analyzed are a 3-phase voltage source inverter (VSI), a Dual fed inverter and three single-phase HBridge VSIs. These converters are modulated using Space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) as it has better performance compared to Sine PWM. MATLAB-Simulink models are developed for the converter topologies. The simulation results show that the three single-phase inverter topology feeding the drive is the best alternative when compared on the basis of battery requirement and switch loss. Moreover, each H-bridge inverter (in the three single-phase inverter topology) can be used as charger and the problem of circulating current during charging will also be least as compared to other schemes. © 2022 River Publishers.Item Magnetic Coupling Characteristics and Efficiency Analysis of Spiral Magnetic Power Pads for Inductive WPT System(River Publishers, 2022) Kishan, D.The inductive wireless power transfer system (IWPT) for electric vehicle battery charging works based on the principle of mutual induction (MI). The amount of power transfer from source to vehicle battery be contingent on the mutual inductance (MI) within the inductively coupled pads. This mutual inductance depends on the type of the inductive power pads, the distance among them, their positioning etc. This paper develops and study the inductive coupling characteristics of identical spiral circular and square inductive power pads. The coupling characteristics at various misalignments with different vertical distance between the coils is presented. In this work, the inductive power pads without using ferrite bars, and with ferrite bars are considered. The coupling characteristics of the spiral circular and square are computed using FEM simulations and validated with experimental results. This paper also investigated the power loss and efficiency analysis of the spiral inductive pads of the resonant IWPT system. © 2022 River Publishers.Item Operation and control of multiple electric vehicle load profiles in bipolar microgrid with photovoltaic and battery energy systems(Elsevier Ltd, 2023) Nisha, K.S.; Gaonkar, D.N.; Sabhahit, N.S.Charging of electric vehicles is going to be a major electrical load in the near future, as more and more population shift to electric auto-motives from conventional internal combusted engine-powered vehicles. Integration of electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) might even burden the existing grid to a point of collapse or grid failure. Establishing charging stations interfaced with bipolar DC microgrids along the roads and highways is the most realistic and feasible solution to avoid the overburdening of the existing power system. The bipolar DC microgrid is a far better microgrid structure than the unipolar microgrid structure in many aspects like reliability, flexibility, and controllability. It can provide multiple voltage level interfaces according to the load demands, which is very apt for different charging levels of electric vehicles (EVs). Operation of multiple sources and multiple loads connected to bipolar DC microgrid will affect DC voltage regulation, capacitance-voltage balancing, and overall stable operation of the grid. In order to mitigate these power quality problems arising in multi-node bipolar DC microgrids, a decentralized model predictive control is proposed in this paper. EV charging load profiles are modeled and developed by considering standard driving cycles, state of charge, and power demand of multiple vehicles to study the effect of unpredictable varying EV loads in the bipolar DC microgrid. EVCS thus modeled are connected to solar photovoltaic-battery energy storage fed bipolar DC microgrid with three-level/bipolar converters and analyzed under dynamic conditions for capacitance–voltage unbalance mitigation, voltage regulation, and the stability of operation with model predictive control. The limited range of EVs and the lack of charging facilities make it harder to gain widespread adoption of the EV service. Several optimisation algorithms for EV routes have not yet resolved the problems of trip time and travel cost. The study provides a Bat optimisation technique to reduce trip time and costs while taking into account customer service requests and EV charging schedules. Taking into account battery capacity, charging duration, and delivery/pickup needs, the suggested method may determine the optimal path to supercharger stations. To demonstrate its effectiveness, it is compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms across a variety of benchmark cases. © 2023 The Authors. IET Power Electronics published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of The Institution of Engineering and Technology.Item Optimal Placement and Sizing of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in a Grid-Tied DC Microgrid Using Modified TLBO Method(MDPI, 2023) Krishnamurthy, N.K.; Sabhahit, J.N.; Jadoun, V.K.; Gaonkar, D.N.; Shrivastava, A.; Rao, V.S.; Kudva, G.In this work, a DC microgrid consists of a solar photovoltaic, wind power system and fuel cells as sources interlinked with the utility grid. The appropriate sizing and positioning of electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) and renewable energy sources (RESs) are concurrently determined to curtail the negative impact of their placement on the distribution network’s operational parameters. The charging station location problem is presented in a multi-objective context comprising voltage stability, reliability, the power loss (VRP) index and cost as objective functions. RES and EVCS location and capacity are chosen as the objective variables. The objective functions are tested on modified IEEE 33 and 123-bus radial distribution systems. The minimum value of cost obtained is USD 2.0250 × 106 for the proposed case. The minimum value of the VRP index is obtained by innovative scheme 6, i.e., 9.6985 and 17.34 on 33-bus and 123-bus test systems, respectively. The EVCSs on medium- and large-scale networks are optimally placed at bus numbers 2, 19, 20; 16, 43, and 107. There is a substantial rise in the voltage profile and a decline in the VRP index with RESs’ optimal placement at bus numbers 2, 18, 30; 60, 72, and 102. The location and size of an EVCS and RESs are optimized by the modified teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) technique, and the results show the effectiveness of RESs in reducing the VRP index using the proposed algorithm. © 2023 by the authors.Item Three-Leg DC-DC Converter for Efficient Inductive Power Transfer of Electric Vehicles for Wide-Range Battery Applications(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2023) Vinod, M.; Kishan, D.; Dastagiri Reddy, B.D.The design of an inductive power transfer system for different electric vehicle (EV) models with widely varied battery pack voltages has been a challenging task. The majority of modern EV models are equipped with 400 or 800 V battery packs. To charge both batteries efficiently, an additional dc-dc converter on the receiver side is employed, which reduces the overall system efficiency and also increases the cost. This letter proposes a reduced switch count novel converter to charge distinct EV models without degrading the efficiency of the system. The proposed converter has two operating modes, a voltage doubler mode to charge an 800 V battery and a current doubler mode to charge a 400 V battery at the same power level. MATLAB/Simulink simulations have been carried out to verify the performance of the three-leg converter for both 400 and 800 V batteries at 7.2 kW. Furthermore, a laboratory prototype of the proposed converter for 500 W has been built using the silicon carbide (SiC) devices, and the results obtained are provided. © 1986-2012 IEEE.
