Item Simulation-based Performance Evaluation of Skewed Uncontrolled Intersections(Springer, 2023) Arathi, A.R.; Harikrishna, M.; Mohan, M.This study has developed simulation-based models for evaluating the performance of skewed uncontrolled intersections since the existing models do not consider the effect of skew angle. The calibration parameters for simulating four-legged uncontrolled intersections are suggested. The results indicate that the developed simulation model can predict the capacity and level of service more accurately than the existing Indo-HCM. Moreover, different scenarios were also analysed to study the influence of speed breaker, temporary median, widening, and change in vehicle proportions on capacity. The study also proposes skew-angle-based volume warrants for the capacity of approach roads, which will be helpful for design engineers. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Intelligent Transportation Systems Japan.Item Spatiotemporal capacity estimation of bus rapid transit system based on dwell time analysis(King Saud University, 2024) Angadi, V.S.; Halyal, S.; Mulangi, R.H.The performance study of an urban transport system, particularly a Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), must report on its operations and reliability. Such study of BRTS comprises numerous facets, including capacity, which directly influences how the system practically operates and serves the commuters. Hubballi-Dharwad Bus Rapid Transit System (HDBRTS) has been operational since 2018. A performance study is necessary to evaluate the performance of HDBRTS, which aids in its upgradation and improvement. The current research uses the experimental technique through an innovative and inspired basis to comment on the HDBRTS's performance by estimating the corridor's operational capacity at different spatial and temporal fluctuations. The selected route of the HDBRTS comprises combined segregated (exclusive traffic environment) and unsegregated (mixed traffic environment) stretches. The current study mainly conducted a video graphics-based survey to acquire the necessary data on identified spatial and temporal trends at various HDBRTS bus stations. The essential data gathered consists of Dwell Time (DT)-based data at each station, summarising the total time a bus takes to serve passengers at a station. DT is inversely proportional to the capacity of the particular bus station, which is related to the Failure Rate (FR). FR values of all the bus stations of the route were analyzed using DT, and then capacity values were calculated at different spatiotemporal patterns. Study results show that the busiest stations of the identified routes with critical DT values have FR values in the range of 1–2%, contradicting previous studies. The variations in the capacity of the stations, both spatially and temporally, were graphically represented with the minimum capacity of the segregated stretch as 36 buses/hr and the unsegregated stretch as 31 buses/hr. Finally, the Level Of Service (LOS) of the chosen study corridor was developed using the K-Means clustering algorithm and validated using the Silhouette Coefficient technique. The silhouette coefficient values obtained range from 0.52 to 0.74, indicating a reasonable structure. © 2023 The AuthorsItem Techno-economic analysis of integrated torrefaction and pelleting process(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2025) Goyal, I.; Prasad, A.; Kumar, S.; Ojha, D.K.In this work, a techno-economic analysis of an integrated torrefaction and pelleting process is conducted. The proposed integrated process is a single-step process to produce torrefied rice straw pellets. The proposed process shall work as an alternative to the existing multi-step/multi-site process that has multiple disadvantages. Like the conventional process, the proposed process consists of cutting, drying, grinding, torrefaction, and pelleting unit. However, the proposed process doesn’t involve any external binder as the pelleting and torrefaction steps are merged. The binding is achieved by utilizing the lignin present naturally in the biomass and softens during the torrefaction step. The techno-economic assessment estimates that the briquetting process with a production capacity of 30,000 tons briquette/annum could be very profitable and shows a return on investment (ROI) of 30%, payout time of 2.4 years and break-even point of 42% at a selling price of briquette of 73 $/ton. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Item Channel capacity enhancement of RIS-assisted FSO communication system for high-speed trains access connectivity(Elsevier B.V., 2025) Kumar, A.; Dewangan, K.; Krishnan, P.The rising utilization and technological progress of high-speed train (HST) systems, combined with the requirement for uninterrupted and dependable internet connectivity, have made it essential to provide broadband internet services onboard HSTs. Free space optics communication (FSOC) is a promising technology for providing broadband Internet access to HSTs. Technological innovations such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are being explored to enhance the performance of FSOC systems. This study proposes an Optimal Rate Adaptation (ORA)-based RIS-assisted FSOC system. We investigated the statistical properties of RIS-assisted and direct FSO channels under moderate to strong turbulence conditions with and without pointing errors. Considering the aforementioned fading conditions, we subsequently formulated the average signal-to-noise ratio and the average channel capacity of the system using the ORA technique. The results show that the proposed RIS-assisted FSOC system achieves an average spectral efficiency (ASE) of 4 bits/sec/Hz at 24 dB average SNR for a 500 m link length. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
