Item Applications of Machine Learning in Diabetic Foot Ulcer Diagnosis using Multimodal Images: A Review(International Association of Engineers, 2023) Mayya, V.; Tummala, V.; Reddy, C.U.; Mishra, P.; Boddu, R.; Olivia, D.; Kamath S․, S.S.Diabetes related complications such as Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFU) may necessitate recurrent hospitalisations and expensive treatments. Uncontrolled diabetes can result in severe DFUs, resulting in amputation of lower limbs or feet, prolonged debilitation and diminished quality of life. Early diagnosis and proactive management are reported to significantly enhance the prognosis and reduce the onset of further complications. In this study, research works on developing clinical decision support systems (CDSS) for the identification and segmentation of DFU are systematically reviewed. The techniques employed range from traditional image processing techniques to approaches based on deep learning (DL). A taxonomy of DFU CDSSs is presented, categorised into two groups: RGB-based techniques and thermal imaging-based approaches. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt at a comprehensive study of CDSSs for DFU related investigative tasks, based on different imaging modalities. We also delve into the difficulties experienced in the process of creating efficient, reliable, and accurate models for the early detection of DFU, and highlight the vast potential for further research in this emerging domain. © (2023), (International Association of Engineers). Continuous water quality monitoring, health management, real-time growth monitoring, and biomass estimation are critical aquaculture activities. Recent advances in computer vision, image processing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly in Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL), enable the control, drive, and solve the problems related to daily real-time aquaculture activities. The performance of various ML and DL models and the quality and availability of public datasets in this domain remain underexplored, and the redefinition of the role of AI in aquaculture is the motivation for this study. This survey aims to analyse and evaluate various methods and datasets for monitoring water quality, estimating fish biomass, disease prediction, and behavioural analysis, to highlight recent developments and to seek the attention of researchers to address the challenges and concerns of aquaculture systems. Currently, there is no single, generalised AI model capable of performing all essential aquaculture activities using continuous time-series data generated from diverse, heterogeneous ponds across a wide geographical area. To address this gap, a 5G-enabled Federated Learning (FL) framework utilising Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for cooperative data collection and model training is highly recommended. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.Item Artificial neural networks model for the prediction of steady state phenol biodegradation in a pulsed plate bioreactor(2008) Shetty K, K.V.; Nandennavar, S.; Srinikethan, G.Background: A recent innovation in fixed film bioreactors is the pulsed plate bioreactor (PPBR) with immobilized cells. The successful development of a theoretical model for this reactor relies on the knowledge of several parameters, which may vary with the process conditions. It may also be a time-consuming and costly task because of their nonlinear nature. Artificial neural networks (ANN) offer the potential of a generic approach to the modeling of nonlinear systems. Results: A feedforward ANN based model for the prediction of steady state percentage degradation of phenol in a PPBR by immobilized cells of Nocardia hydrocarbonoxydans (NCIM 2386) during continuous biodegradation has been developed to correlate the steady state percentage degradation with the flow rate, influent phenol concentration and vibrational velocity (amplitude x frequency). The model used two hidden layers and 53 parameters (weights and biases). The network model was then compared with a Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) model, derived from the same training data. Further these two models were used to predict the percentage degradation of phenol for blind test data. Conclusions: The performance of the ANN model was superior to that of the MRA model and was found to be an efficient data-driven tool to predict the performance of a PPBR for phenol biodegradation. © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry.Item Genetic algorithm based support vector machine regression in predicting wave transmission of horizontally interlaced multi-layer moored floating pipe breakwater(Elsevier Ltd, 2012) Patil, S.G.; Mandal, S.; Hegde, A.V.Planning and design of coastal protection works like floating pipe breakwater require information about the performance characteristics of the structure in reducing the wave energy. Several researchers have carried out analytical and numerical studies on floating breakwaters in the past but failed to give a simple mathematical model to predict the wave transmission through floating breakwaters by considering all the boundary conditions. Computational intelligence techniques, such as, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), fuzzy logic, genetic programming and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are successfully used to solve complex problems. In the present paper, a hybrid Genetic Algorithm Tuned Support Vector Machine Regression (GA-SVMR) model is developed to predict wave transmission of horizontally interlaced multilayer moored floating pipe breakwater (HIMMFPB). Furthermore, optimal SVM and kernel parameters of GA-SVMR models are determined by genetic algorithm. The GA-SVMR model is trained on the data set obtained from experimental wave transmission of HIMMFPB using regular wave flume at Marine Structure Laboratory, National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, Surathkal, Mangalore, India. The results are compared with ANN and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) models in terms of correlation coefficient, root mean square error and scatter index. Performance of GA-SVMR is found to be reliably superior. b-spline kernel function performs better than other kernel functions for the given set of data. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Most of the existing bio inspired protocols for MANETs focused only on the routing problem. In this paper, a novel heuristic bio inspired routing with load balancing algorithm referred to as Load Balanced Termite (LB-Termite) is proposed for MANETs by exploiting the salient features of social insect, "Termites". The primary objective of the LB-Termite algorithm is to find the stable nodes and thereby giving preferences for these stable nodes during the path setup; thus finding the reliable route to the destination. The secondary objective of the proposed LB-Termite algorithm is to mitigate the stagnation problem by using pheromone heuristic control method. The simulation results of LB-Termite are compared with other state-of-the-art bio inspired routing algorithms (ACO based Simple Ant Routing Algorithm and the Termite algorithm) and non bio inspired (Ad Hoc on Demand Distance Vector Routing Algorithm) routing protocols for its performance evaluation and the results are found to be encouraging. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.Item Fault diagnosis of deep groove ball bearing through discrete wavelet features using support vector machine(COMADEM International rajbknrao@btinternet.com, 2014) Vernekar, K.; Kumar, H.; Gangadharan, K.V.Bearings are the most important and frequently used machine components in most of the rotating machinery. In industry, breakdown of such crucial components causes heavy losses. So prevention of failure of such components is very essential. This paper presents an online fault detection of a bearing used in an internal combustion engine through machine learning approach using vibration signals of bearing in healthy and simulated faulty conditions. Vibration signals are acquired from bearing in healthy as well as different simulated fault conditions of bearing. The Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) features were extracted from vibration signals using MATLAB program. Decision tree technique (J48 algorithm) has been used for important feature selection out of extracted DWT features. Support vector machine is being used as a classifier and obtained results found with classification accuracy of 98.67%.The advantage of machine learning technique for fault diagnosis over conventional vibration analysis approach has demonstrated in this paper.Item A novel sentiment analysis of social networks using supervised learning(Springer-Verlag Wien michaela.bolli@springer.at, 2014) Anjaria, M.; Guddeti, R.M.R.Online microblog-based social networks have been used for expressing public opinions through short messages. Among popular microblogs, Twitter has attracted the attention of several researchers in areas like predicting the consumer brands, democratic electoral events, movie box office, popularity of celebrities, the stock market, etc. Sentiment analysis over a Twitter-based social network offers a fast and efficient way of monitoring the public sentiment. This paper studies the sentiment prediction task over Twitter using machine-learning techniques, with the consideration of Twitter-specific social network structure such as retweet. We also concentrate on finding both direct and extended terms related to the event and thereby understanding its effect. We employed supervised machine-learning techniques such as support vector machines (SVM), Naive Bayes, maximum entropy and artificial neural networks to classify the Twitter data using unigram, bigram and unigram + bigram (hybrid) feature extraction model for the case study of US Presidential Elections 2012 and Karnataka State Assembly Elections (India) 2013. Further, we combined the results of sentiment analysis with the influence factor generated from the retweet count to improve the prediction accuracy of the task. Experimental results demonstrate that SVM outperforms all other classifiers with maximum accuracy of 88 % in predicting the outcome of US Elections 2012, and 68 % for Indian State Assembly Elections 2013. © 2014, Springer-Verlag Wien.Item An extreme learning machine approach for modeling evapotranspiration using extrinsic inputs(Elsevier B.V., 2016) Patil, A.P.; Deka, P.C.Precise estimation of evapotranspiration is crucial for accurate crop-water estimation. Recently machine learning (ML) techniques like artificial neural network (ANN) are being widely used for modeling the process of evapotranspiration. However, ANN faces issues like trapping in local minima, slow learning and tuning of meta-parameters. In this study an improved extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithm was used to estimate weekly reference crop evapotranspiration (ETo). The study was carried out for Jodhpur and Pali meteorological weather stations located in the Thar Desert, India. The study evaluated the performance of three different input combinations. The first input combination used locally available maximum and minimum air temperature data while the second and third combination used ETo values from another station (extrinsic inputs) along with the locally available temperature data as inputs. The performance of ELM models was compared with the empirical Hargreaves equation, ANN and least-square support vector machine (LS-SVM) models. Root mean squared error (RMSE), Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE) and threshold statistics (TS) were used for comparing the performance of the models. The performance of ELM model was found to be better than the Hargreaves and ANN model. The LS-SVM and ELM displayed similar performance. ELM3 models, with 36 and 33 neurons in hidden layer were found to be the best models (RMSE of 0.43 for Jodhpur and 0.33 for Pali station) for estimating weekly ETo at Jodhpur and Pali stations respectively. The results showed that ELM is a simple yet efficient algorithm which exhibited good performance; hence, can be recommended for estimating weekly ETo. Furthermore, it was also found that use of ETo values from another station can help in improving the efficiency of ML models in limited data scenario. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.Item Fault diagnosis studies of face milling cutter using machine learning approach(Multi-Science Publishing Co. Ltd claims@sagepub.com, 2016) Madhusudana, C.K.; Budati, S.; Gangadhar, N.; Kumar, H.; Narendranath, S.Successful automation of a machining process system requires an effective and efficient tool condition monitoring system to ensure high productivity, products of desired dimensions, and long machine tool life. As such the component's processing quality and increased system reliability will be guaranteed. This paper presents a classification of healthy and faulty conditions of the face milling tool by using the Naive Bayes technique. A set of descriptive statistical parameters is extracted from the vibration signals. The decision tree technique is used to select significant features out of all statistical extracted features. The selected features are fed to the Naive Bayes algorithm. The output of the algorithm is used to study and classify the milling tool condition and it is found that the Naive Bayes model is able to give 96.9% classification accuracy. Also the performances of the different classifiers are compared. Based on the results obtained, the Naive Bayes technique can be recommended for online monitoring and fault diagnosis of the face milling tool. © 2016 The Author(s).
