Item In order to study sediment travelling paths across shoreline in different seasons, sediment samples were collected normal to the shoreline along three profiles, separated by 220m from Surathkal beach near Karnataka Regional Engineering College (K.R.E.C.), Karnataka. The sediments were analysed for their grain size characteristics (statistical parameters) and sediment trend matrix was prepared. By using sediment trend matrix, sediment travelling paths were drawn. It has been found that during premonsoon, sediments were moving predominantly towards offshore region, resulting in erosion. Sediments were moving predominantly towards shore and build-up of beach takes place during the post monsoon season.(Sediment trend matrix analysis along shore normal transects off Surathkal beach, Karnataka) Rao, S.; Shirlal, K.G.; Rao, N.B.S.2003Item The coastal zone of Mangalore is acquiring an ever-increasing importance due to its rich ocean resources and favourable conditions for development of port based industries. All weather New Mangalore Port (NMP) Trust is the administrative unit of the port, which caters to the needs of large, medium and small-scale industries. The NMP is situated 10 km North of Mangalore, along Karnataka Coast, West Coast of India. The present study was carried out with a view to (i) understand sediment dynamics (ii) erosion/accretion pattern and (iii) study the coastal processes in the vicinity of the NMP breakwaters. Beach face sediment samples were collected and statistical parameters were determined using Folk and Ward (1957) formulae and then Sediment Trend Matrix (STM) was prepared. The STM was used to draw Sediment Transport Paths (STP), from which predominant sediment transport direction was identified. The performance of breakwaters at NMP was assessed by lead line soundings data. Based on the present study it is concluded that the net sediment transport in the vicinity of the NMP coast is very small. The technological advancements in the field of remote sensing and Geographical Information System have been a boon for such surveys. The present paper describes the role of Remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) technologies for geological mapping and characterizing the importance of soils at various scales for identification of suitable sites for mobile communication network. Cellular network design is becoming more and more important since the network quality is highly dependent on the distribution of base stations. To design a cellular network for a particular region efficiently and accurately, the site suitability is an important determination. The country's mobile services market is forecast to grow by a compound annual rate of 28.3% in next five years. India is a vibrant market from communications point of view. The subscriber base in the wireless market in India, the world's fastest growing telecom market reached another milestone when it surpassed 200 million subscribers in Aug 2008. At present there are around 54000 cell sites operated by different GSM/CDMA operators. This number would further go up to 80,000 in next couple of years. To serve an increasing number of users requires an increasing number of base stations. Thus, operators must carefully plan the deployment and configurations of radio base stations to support voice and data traffic at a level of quality expected by customers. The present study carried out in the Udupi district of Karnataka State based on IRS 1C/1D LISS-III and CARTOSAT-1 satellite data. Various thematic maps like geology, soil, geomorphology, slope and land use/land cover with DEM has helped in understanding the terrain in a better way. The slides occurred in a rugged hilly terrain which is a part of Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt. The slides are predominantly debris slides of varying dimensions and occurred in khondalitic country having slopes of the order of 30°. The debris are composed mostly of scree, soil, boulders and weathered rock. The significant causative factor of triggering slides was manifested through heavy rainfall associated with cyclonic storm. The causes of the slope failure include toe erosion, debris accumulation that resulted in blockade, overtopping and changes in the stream courses. The present paper is aimed to identify damage assessment, magnitude of slides and causes of slides with an attempt to suggest some long term corrective and control measures in the area. © 2010 Cafet-Innova Technical Society.Item Impact assessment of watershed development programme - A case study of Itagi watershed(2010) Palakshappa, K.; Nagaraj, M.K.; Shivapur, A.V.Soil, water and vegetation are the important gifts of nature to mankind. Welfare and development of mankind and its civilization revolves around conservation and development of these vital natural resources, which are so interdependent that one can not be managed efficiently without the other two. Watershed Development Programs (WDP) going on in India basically as soil and water conservative programs (as a policy response to the increasing environmental crisis and non-sustainability of agriculture especially in the dry land/semi-arid regions) has modified substantially with the introduction of watershed guidelines in 1994 by the Government of India. In the present study the area considered for assessment is Itagi sub watershed in Ranebennur taluk, Haveri district, Karnataka. During the watershed development programme soil and water conservation structures were constructed in the study area in the year 2004. The analysis of data reveals that there is an improvement in the groundwater recharge, increase in yield of the wells, increase in agricultural production, reduction in soil erosion and many other tangible and intangible benefits as a result of this watershed development programme. © 2010 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY. All rights reserved.Item Air quality assessment of Dhanbad District, India - A case study(2010) Anantharamu, A.; Singh, G.; Venkat Reddy, D.Ambient air pollution status in Dhanbad district is studied and presented in this article. The selection of Dhanbad is made considering its importance and the nature of activities taking place around the district. For the assessment of ambient air quality in Dhanbad, the following five locations were chosen: Main Gate of Indian School of Mines(ISM), Dhanbad: It is a site representing purely commercial activities and road traffic. Bankmore: It is one of the busiest marketing centres of the district and is surrounded by residential areas. All the vehicles going to Bokaro pass by this place and thus the traffic density is pretty high. Kusunda: It is a place 10.9 kilometres from Dhanbad Railway Station. It is just beside one of the coal mines, hence, all vehicles going to the mine passes through this place. Steel Gate: It consists of a small market. Trucks and other heavy vehicle are more frequent during night as this road connects to a highway. ISM Admin Block: It can be considered as a sensitive area since it is a very calm place where the usage of vehicles is minimum throughout the day. Monitoring of ambient air quality is done following the standard procedure prescribed in IS: 5182. In addition, the concentration of lead, zinc, cadmium, copper, manganese and iron metals in SPM is also monitored. The ambient air quality assessment was done in the month of June, 2009. The concentration of SPM was higher than the permissible limit in three locations namely ISM Main Gate, Bankmore and Steel Gate, while it was less than the permissible limit in other two locations, ISM Admin Block and Kusunda. Since the generation of SPM was mainly due to vehicular traffic it was expected to cross the limit in the above mentioned three locations as density of vehicular movement is very high. © 2010 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.Item Studies on concrete cylinders subjected to elevated temperatures(2010) Babu Narayan, K.S.; Anil Kumar, G.; Chandrakala, C.; Shashikumar, H.M.; Venkataramana, K.; Yaragal, S.C.; Chinnagiri Gowda, H.C.; Reddy, G.R.; Sharma, A.Concrete is a poor conductor of heat, but can suffer considerable damage when exposed to fire. Concrete in structures is likely to be exposed to high temperatures during fire. The relative properties of concrete after such an exposure are of great importance in terms of the serviceability of buildings. Unraveling the heating history of concrete is important to forensic research or to determine whether a fire exposed concrete structures and its components are still structurally sound or not. Assessment of fire damage concrete structures usually starts with visual observation of color change, cracking and spalling. On heating, a change in color from normal to pink is often observed and this is useful since it coincides with the onset of significant loss of concrete strength. This work reports the characteristics of concrete at elevated temperatures. Popular normal strength grades (M20, M25, M30, M35, M40 and M45) produced by Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) India, Mangalore have been used in production of test specimens (150 mm diameter and 300mm height cylinders) to obtain more meaningful and realistic data. In the preliminary phase 150 mm diameter and 300mm height cylinders were cast, cured and tested by destructive method for gathering data on strength characteristics. Later these test samples were subjected to elevated temperatures ranging from 100°C to 800°C, in steps of 100°C with a retention period of 2 hours. After exposure, weight losses were determined and then again destructive tests were conducted to estimate the residual split tensile strength.
